Context and Research

To be able to start this project I have been researching into the history of gay club culture and drag. My research has lead me on to understand a lot of the influences I see today within Ru Pauls drag race and the drag queens of today, taking inspiration or paying homage to influential figures from there past. Mainly the reaction I want from this project is similar to the attention the New York Club Kids attracted in the 90s, additionally taking more influences from legends such as Leigh Bowery, Amanda Lepore, James st James, Ru Paul and most the club kids from the 90s. A big step in my research was from watching Paris is burning and Pose, the rise of drag, awareness of Ball Culture increased through Madonnas 'Vogue' single in the summer of 1990 .Madonna was inspired by vogue dancers and choreographers Jose Gutierez Xtravaganza and Luis Xtravaganza from the Harlem House Ball community, the origin of the dance form, and they introduced "vogueing" to her at the Sound Factory club in New York City. The documentary Paris is burning included the original queens of Ball Culture such as Dorian Corey, Pepper Labeija, Kim Pendavis and other legendary mothers and queens. Pose then gave me a dramatised longer more in depth version and an insight into the life queens lead and how transexuals struggled, they highlighted the aids crisis similar to Its A Sin. Witnessing the makeup on the actors in those particular senses was mesmerising, its so realistic and and captures the severity and aesthetic of the disease.

This is the media that's supported my research.
